Themes & Symbols
Through the story one theme that can be quite easily missed is identity. In the story Albus doesn't know who he is, but instead only knows who he should be. It becomes clear that Albus is being put under influences both by peers, parents, the media, and family expectations (19-28). These influences lead Albus into a never ending pattern where he feels as if he needs to prove himself, and in the process of attempting to, risks bringing back the infamous dark lord Voldemort (219-221). During this trial he proves that a person can be fit in by being themselves, clearly seen when he saved his father from Delphi (290).
